Radim Zenkl
Originally from the Czech Republic, Zenkl defected to the USA in 1989
for political freedom and to be closer to his musical influences. He has
recorded five solo
CDs (released on David Grisman’s ‘Acoustic Disc’, ‘Shanachie’ and his
own label ‘Ventana Records’) and appeared as a guest on numerous other
projects. Zenkl has performed with the David Grisman Quintet, Jerry Garcia,
David Lindley, Dan Hicks, Peter Rowan, Tim O’Brien, and has shared the
stage with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Tuck & Patti and the Preservation
Hall Jazz Band, among others. Zenkl has extended the technical possibilities
of the mandolin by inventing new styles of playing which sometimes allow
him to sound like two instruments simultaneously, placing him at the cutting
edge of the mandolin’s future.
Leo Chern
Chern has moved to the USA in the spring of 1998 from the Czech Republic.
In his homeland he performed with the nation’s premiere classical formations
and wrote several modern classical music pieces. Chern’s folk/rock band
‘Odpich’ won the Czech National Band Contest for three consecutive years
(1993-1996). He has composed soundtracks for the Polish/British movie ‘Workers’
(1994) and the Austrian film ‘Lake’ (1995). Chern is a member of the exclusive
‘World
Association of Music Composers’, based in Washington, D.C. Currently
he teaches music as a guest lecturer at the Portland Community College.
Zenkl & Chern
Chern comes from Ostrava, the same city as Zenkl. Even though they
never met in the Czech Republic, their musical and cultural connection
is natural. Together
they share interest in a variety of musical genres spanning from the
traditional folk music to the contemporary styles.
